The Community Wellness Council was originally established by Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District as the Bellmore-Merrick Wellness Council in 1996. The board of directors concluded that the Council should represent all constituents of the community, and in 1998, the Council sought and was granted 501(c)3 status from the IRS. The programs sponsored by the Council now focus on wellness throughout the ages. Its board of directors functions as a true community partnership whose members include representatives from five school districts, elected officials, civic organizations, chambers of commerce, clergy and a counseling agency.
